What Makes You Keep Reading, or Scrolling? It’s all about the Hook!

Have you ever wondered what it is about certain videos that keeps you scrolling? Or why particular books and authors are your favorite to read again and again. Or, why people all over the world still travel miles and miles to see the Mona Lisa.

These writers, artists, and content creators know how to hook readers and viewers. But, how?

A great “hook” will . . .

  • Drop you into the middle of a conversation or moment

  • Immerse you in a sensory experience (sight, sound, smell, etc.)

  • Create tension or drama through competing ideas

  • Present a problem that will be solved later

  • Tap into your curiosity by looking closely at a specific topic or object

This is your job as you write your personal essay: find a way to hook your reader from the start!

At the end of the day, the “hook” of your personal essay should ultimately draw your reader in, stir intrigue, and make them excited and eager to keep reading and reading and reading.
