How Do You Write About Yourself?

When my oldest son was applying to colleges, he received an email from a university that said:

If you boil your future down to the answering of three questions, it should be these:

What are you good at?

What do you enjoy?

What is the world asking you to be?

These three questions are also great ones to ask as you begin the journey of writing your personal essay and deciding where your journey will continue after high school.

What are you good at?

Reflect on your life and consider your strengths. Create a list of these. Include adjectives, phrases, and any positive aspects of your life’s journey.

What do you enjoy?

Think about the daily activities, programs, and adventures that you have been on in your life and chosen to include in your one unique experience. What brings you joy?

What is the world asking you to be?

Think about opportunities that have arisen in your life, whether out of challenging circumstances, being asked to step forward, being rewarded, or because of an unexpected change in your path.

At the end of the day, you start writing about yourself by writing. Get a journal or a piece of paper and begin with just a few words. Then, add more! Be open. Be vulnerable. Be honest.
